Chapter 4: Charting Your Course 
Story of fear of flying and to overcome, he took flying lessons.  
Phase one: Create Alignment; Envision Your Destination 
“Living the Cycle of Spiritual Guidance and continually refining your Corse Values is how you stay connected with God” 
Phase Two: Chart Your Course 
When flying, you have waypoints that are specific landmarks that help you get from the starting point to the destination 
All goals should have waypoints to help you stay on track and make the goal seem smaller and manageable 
Phase 3: Fly the Course 
You have done all the prep work, now is the time to act. You need a compass and a heading indicator that are both accurately calibrated in relation to true north. “The Cycle of Spiritual Guidance and your Core Values will allow you to calibrate your life toward the true north of God.”

Chapter 5: The Formula 
Story of the breakthrough of dog food formula.  
The Formula: 
  • 1. Get up early 
    • a. Early to Bed, Early to Rise, Makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise 
  • 2. Work hard 
    • a. “Talent is a dreadfully cheap commodity, cheaper than table salt. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work and study; a constant process of honing.” Stephen King 
  • 3. Get your education 
    • a. All forms of learning count. 
  • 4. Find your oil 
    • a. “To be successful, we all have to discover that thing-that life pursuit- that truly excites, motivates, and empowers us.” 
  • 5. Make your mark 
    • a. Find your Lupine flowers to leave for the world. 
  • 6. Give back 
    • a. “The ultimate purpose of the Formula is to empower you to become a tool in the hands of God. You do this by preparing to serve others.” 

Chapter 6: Beware the Double Life 
Are you living like a spy and changing your personality to suit the situation? What happens when two situations intersect?  
Story of sailing a boat and keeping your hand on the tiller. Where are you steering your life? 
Signs that you are living a congruent life: 
  • · What you see if what you get 
  • · Integrity 
  • · Stand Firm
    · Know when to seek help 
Results: 
  • · Peace 
  • · Respect 
  • · Constant alignment with God 
  • · Untarnished reputation 
  • · Joy in the journey of life 

Making a Living and a Life 
“Satan quickly recognized the work environment as a strategic setting to stir up all manner of sin, including covetousness, self-indulgence, living beyond one’s means, anger, infidelity, greed, and even theft and murder.” 
Charles Dickens Christmas Carol – Ebenezer Scrooge transforms as we should.  
Grade Levels for showing the interplay between a love of God and our fellowmen on the one hand and the need to make a living on the other.


True Blue, Through and Through 
Story of Joseph F. Smith – was challenged by some scary men “Are you a Mormon?” He responded, “Yes siree; dyed in the wool; true blue, through and through.” The men loved it and let him go on his way.  
Integrity – True Blue, through and through? 
Do you care if the professor who determines your grades is fair? Do you care if your banker is honest? Would you like to know that the surgeon didn’t cheat his way through his residency?
Story of the Comet (airplane model) that worked great at first and then couldn’t handle the repeated stress and would break. Can your integrity handle the repeated stress? 

  • 1. Decide today, once and for all, that you will be worthy of trust 
  • 2. Have faith that the Lord can and will help you, and then diligently seek His help 
  • 3. Make covenants and keep them 
  • 4. Stand up for what you believe 
  • 5. Expect your integrity to be challenged 
  • 6. Don’t give up 
  • 7. Covenant-or perhaps I should say, renew your covenant – with our Father and His Son to do what you came here to do

  • A. Why are Ethics Important? – story of firing a loyal, but questionable employee for a smart, but dishonest CEO – who later got him fired for “embezzlement” because he bought a new house that was closer to work (for the same prize as his current house). Loyalty wins.

    • a. Get a Great Partner 
    • b. Sales 
    • c. Confidence you will have 1000s of great ideas

    • e. A supportive family (Christmas day story) 
    • f. The pride of a fat boy 
    • g. Common sense 
    • h. Too Little money – yes, not enough – this makes you inventive – Think Monty Python and coconuts- they didn’t have money for horses

    • j. Comfortable, Cheap Furniture – spend everything on great people and equipment  
  • C. Risks in Business: You need to put some skin in the game 
  • D. Action Hero Ken Zolot
