Week 8: 2/23 – 3/1 A Field Guide for the Hero’s Journey  ( these chapters are out of order) This book is a little different than most. It takes you through the steps of the Hero’s Journey, but then gives your two viewpoints (the two authors) and then some poems, stories, inspirational quotes, etc. that go with that step. Chapter 5: Stories in the Road Follow your goal. Learn to work hard. Learn to endure. Chapter 6: The Giant of Despair “I Have a Dream” speech – always inspiring “I believe in the sun even when it is not shining, I believe in love even when I do not feel it, I believe in God even when He is silent” Chapter 8: Fighting the Dragon Every hero faces a “dragon” or a life-changing challenge. “This is a man-eating, fire-breathing dragon. You will not escape unscathed. You will not emerge unchanged. You must sacrifice part of yourself in order to conquer and move forward.” “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” – I love this speech However Long and...

Week 7: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People When it comes to the 7 Habits, from “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey, I like to start at the beginning. Be proactive. Being a self-starter has never been an issue for me as it is built into my personality. I sometimes must remind myself that help is a good thing and doing things myself is not necessary. The next step is “Begin with the end in mind.” When I was little, I loved mazes, but I found that starting at the end was far easier than starting at the beginning. The maze had not changed, but my perspective had and sometimes that is all the difference. When I look at goals and things that I want to accomplish in life, I need to change my perspective and start at the end and work way back to the present. I can handle that if I keep a gospel perspective and “Think Eternal.”   The next step is where I get stuck. Put first things first. I worked in the food industry for many years and got very good at rotating ...

Week 6: Feb. 9 - 15

Week 6 Notes:  Jan Newman made an interesting point that you need to find balance between family, church, work, and life in general. Set boundaries for family and stick to them. No one has ever said on their death bed, “I wish I worked more.” They regret family, missed connections, missed opportunities, wasted time, and much more. But no one regrets the daily grind of work. Yet, we do it day in and day out. Why? How can I change my life to something different? I want to spend more time in the church and serving the Lord, but I can’t even seem to get Sundays off reliably.    The five master keys to mastery: Instruction, Practice, Surrender, Intentionality, and The Edge. I feel like I’m stuck at the surrender stage. I always thought my greatest strength was my inability to give up. I used to think it was perseverance, but sometimes it is just stupidity. Not all things need to be beaten to the end, but sometimes you throw it away and start over. Or you go a different d...

Week 5: Feb. 2 – 8  Mastery by George Leonard  Originally this was an article written as part of Ultimate Fitness for Esquire and it was so overwhelmingly  received that he wrote a book  - Chapter 1: What is Mastery?  Example of learning Tennis – we make progress, then we plateau, we make progress and plateau... but  higher each time  Life is a continual state of mastery and learning  - Chapter 2: Meet the Dabbler, the Obsessive, and the Hacker  Dabbler: approaches each new thing with enormous enthusiasm "The eternal kid" Obsessive: bottom-line type of person, not one to settle for second best:  I don't give up! Until I crash I admit this is mostly me Hacker: willing to stay on the plateau indefinitely. At work, he does only enough to get by, leaves on time or early, takes every break, talks instead of doing his job, and wonders why he doesn't get promoted. When your tennis partner starts improving his or her game and you don't,...
