Week 8: 2/23 – 3/1

A Field Guide for the Hero’s Journey

(these chapters are out of order)

This book is a little different than most. It takes you through the steps of the Hero’s Journey, but then gives your two viewpoints (the two authors) and then some poems, stories, inspirational quotes, etc. that go with that step.

Chapter 5: Stories in the Road

Follow your goal. Learn to work hard. Learn to endure.

Chapter 6: The Giant of Despair

“I Have a Dream” speech – always inspiring

“I believe in the sun even when it is not shining, I believe in love even when I do not feel it, I believe in God even when He is silent”

Chapter 8: Fighting the Dragon

Every hero faces a “dragon” or a life-changing challenge. “This is a man-eating, fire-breathing dragon. You will not escape unscathed. You will not emerge unchanged. You must sacrifice part of yourself in order to conquer and move forward.”

“Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” – I love this speech

However Long and Hard the Road:

1.    Patricia T. Holland: talked about being single and finding your personal potential.

a.   “The only limitations you have are those you set on yourselves. All of the tools and texts are here, right at your hand. But sometimes we cannot recognize the real purpose and significance of the moment which is ours to experience.”

2.    Jeffrey R. Holland

a.   “I plead with you to stay in the harness and keep pulling.”

b.   “Victory-Victory at All Costs” – he quoted Winston Churchill’s speeches and walked through the path of the war with the Nazis

                                          i.    “We shall never surrender.”

c.   Joseph Smith’s Perseverance – he talked about the life of Joseph and all the challenges he went through to only end with death at the age of 38 (younger than me).

d.   The Early Saints; Fulfillment Ahead – he talked about the Saints after Joseph and how they keep pressing forward

e.   Lesson on Perseverance: building of the Salt Lake Temple

                                          i.    Perhaps you will not see the full meaning of your effort in your own lifetime. But your children will, or your children’s children will, until finally you, with all of them, can give the Hosanna shout.

ii.    “I pray that your life may be ‘a monument to Mormon perseverance’ ‘however long and hard the road,’ in the name of Jesus Christ.

Looking Backand Moving Forward: Pres. Thomas S. Monson

Great talk for when a prophet dies and you want to understand what happens next

“I would encourage members of the Church wherever they may be to show kindness and respect for all people everywhere. The world in which we live is filled with diversity. We can and should demonstrate respect toward those whose beliefs differ from ours”

Action Hero David Carrintnton:

The best ideas are probably the third or fourth. It is good to have competition and shows that there is a market for your idea.

Three ways to grow your business:

1.    Increase your number of customers

2.    Increase the frequency of purchase

3.    Increase the average order

You Can Do Anything:

Keep Moving Forward

Don’t underestimate yourself- and the Lord and the great things you can do together

The Five Whys : Eric Ries

Behind every supposedly technical problem, there’s actually a human problem that caused it. Go five layers deep into a problem and discover what really went wrong and how to fix it on each level. Chunk out the solutions too and work on it step by step.

Good Things to Come: Jeffrey R. Holland

I listened to this twice and it made me cry both times. Very inspiring.

Story of family car breaking down at the same spot while trying to move across country.

“Don’t you quit! You keep walking. You keep trying. There is help and happiness ahead. Some blessings come soon. Some come late, and some don’t come till Heaven. But for those who embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ, they come. It will be alright in the end. Trust God, and believe in good things to come.”
