Week 2: Jan. 11-17

Week 2: Jan.  11-17

Treat Life as an Experiment: Start big things as an experiment and then go from there. Think of a big puzzle, start from the outside, then do colors, and then you have done the whole thing.

Randy Pausch's Last Lecture - Totally amazing and worth watching several times.

He walked through his hopes and dreams and how he accomplished them and how we can do the same. I like that he changed some of his dreams to make them possible. He wanted to “be” William Shatner, but later changed it to meet him instead. He went to “space” and got to feel weightlessness. He worked for Disney and did all sorts of things.

What have you done and what do you want to do?

Stars and Steppingstones:

Start at the end of the maze and then work your way back to the beginning. Your “star” is the end goal, but knowing the goal helps you navigate in the present.

The Launching Leaders book:

Chapter 1: Taking Control of Your Life:

The cycle of Spiritual Guidance – listen to the Holy Ghost, follow the promptings, do what you should be doing and be where you should be – and then trust that you will do the right thing

Chapter 2: Who Do You Want To Become? The Power of Defining Your Core Values

Finding your Core Values:

1.      Find Holy Ground

2.      Ponder

3.      Write Core Value Statements

4.      Rank Your Core Values

5.      Do Your Core Values Align With God?

Chapter 3: Mentors: Your Bridge to Success

“No one succeeds alone.”

This is definitely your weak spot – re-read this and maybe take it as a checklist. Find some mentors and maybe become one someday. Be a good people who listens to your mentor.

“Frame” your future – finger frame

Look for a believer

Be observant

Be mindful of God’s hand

Be bold

Be careful

Be a good candidate

Show gratitude

What is Your Calling in Life?

Hands down the best thing I listened to this week. I listened to it four times and still don’t feel like I heard it enough.

“What is your calling in life? If you don’t know yet, how will you find out?”

 Heresies about Calling

1.      You might have a calling if you are lucky, or you might not

2.      You have to find your one true calling in order to be fulfilled

a.       Elder Bruce R McConkie “spiritual gifts are endless in number and infinite in variety”

b.      Some people are Picassos and Michelangelo’s – they know what they will be very young and dive deep – others are more like me: scanners who skim the surface, but are talented in many areas

3.      When you find your calling, work will be bliss

a.       Work comes with the good and the bad -example: Zookeepers

4.      When you find your calling, the world will take notice

a.       Barb – custodian who was so wonderful at her job

b.      Look for examples of nobility among those who do the so-called menial tasks all around you

c.       How can you show your “calling” in your work?

5.      Meaningfulness in life is to be found in your work

a.       Almost true – deceptive

b.      Artist who makes stunning and inspiring masterpieces, but then hoards them in her attic

c.       The Lord expects us to render meaningful service through work

d.      True meaning, as always, comes from service
