A Field Guide for the Hero’s Journey

Chapter 4: What companions do you want with you on your journey?

-“Humility is only a start. Strong, loyal relationships also require effort. Set aside time for those who have always supported you; show them that you will always support them. Be curious about other people’s hopes and dreams; learn to be interested; seek ways to help.”

-“As you sow, so shall you reap”

-“It is good to be a hard worker; but sometimes by ignoring the resources our companions offer, we cause ourselves more work than is necessary.”

The Challenge to Become

-I enjoyed this talk by Elder Dallin H. Oaks from the October 2000 General Conference

-He talked about being converted and to become something greater. It is not about a sum total of our works in this life, but rather what we have become by the end.

-He told the story of Simon Peter, a man who had followed Christ for 3 years, was given the priesthood, who had a testimony, and was preordained to the be the next prophet – was still not “converted.”

-The parable of the wealthy man who wanted to give his son everything, but first his son had to become something more. “That which I have I can easily give you, but that which I am you must obtain for yourself.”

The Heart of Entrepreneurship

This whole document is worth a second read or a third. It feels like a manual to becoming a great entrepreneur and manager. Why isn’t this taught to every manager?

Think Big:

He tells the story of how an average guy and some average coworkers bonded together and made something great. They were ranked as 11th in all their business the first year and 6th the following year. He never dreamed he would be that great, but it takes just as much effort to be good as it does to be great.

License to Pursue Dreams:

-I had never heard of Google’s 20 percent time. I think that is amazing concept that you get to spend 20% of your work time doing whatever you want.

-I love this quote:

“It turns out when you take really smart people, give them really good tools, they build really beautiful, amazing things that are really exciting, and they do it with a lot of passion and momentum, in such a way that you actually see two and a half times the output of what you would expect given the time.”

-Giving your really talented people the license to create and pursue their dreams makes you better as a whole. Leading others to higher ground.

Action Hero Kathy Huber:

I like that she states flat out that creating stuff and getting others to use it is amazing. I agree. I also like that she answers the question about how being a woman has affected her career. It feels like something that we try to think isn’t an issue because it shouldn’t be in this day and age, but it still is. Finding good people who treat you as an equal as a woman is a good thing to have in your travel companions for a journey.

Your Emotional Fingerprint

-Think personality type, but from an emotional standpoint.

-He tells the story of the two wolves who rage a war inside each of us. The one who wins is the one you feed.

-I haven’t heard of this program and I am sucker for understanding yourself. I love personality tests and stuff like that. This program is probably just what I would like.
