Finishers Wanted: First Presidency Message Thomas S. Monson

Tells of a sign in a furniture window that stated “Finishers Wanted”

The sign got Pres. Monson thinking about being a “finisher”

True Marks of a finisher are such:

1.     The Mark of Vision

2.     The Mark of Effort

3.     The Mark of Faith

4.     The Mark of Virtue

5.     The Mark of Courage

To dream the impossible dream,

To fight the unbeatable foe,

To bear with unbearable sorrow,

To run where the brave dare not go.

To right the unrightable wrong,

To love, pure and chaste from afar,

To try, when your arms are too weary,

To reach the unreachable star!

6.     The Mark of Prayer

Recognizing and Shaping Opportunities 2.3-2.4

Strategy and Structure by Alfred Chandler is a great book on defining the economic models which industrial-age businesses were constructed. – Maybe read this?

Crafting a business model involves three sets of decisions:

1. Defining a unique strategy that differentiates the new venture from the alternatives

2. Identifying the resources and capabilities required to execute the strategy

3. Identifying the compelling benefits and value proposition for key stakeholders (including cash flow forecasts, a crucial piece of information for investors)

A business model requires a series of choices:

1.     The industry or industries within which the venture will compete

2.     The markets to serve, the specific needs that will be met and the timing for entering each market

3.     The products, services, and solutions that will be sold and the timing for rollout

4.     The price of these offerings and how they will be differentiated from the alternatives

5.     the key stakeholders that make up the new venture's business ecosystem

Three key categories of growth options an entrepreneur can consider:

1.     Enhance: Make incremental improvements to an existing product or channel to market

2.     Expand: Launch new products OR enter new markets

3.     Explore: Launch new products AND enter new markets (e.g., launch a new business)

Another book suggestion: Heart, Smarts, Guts, and Luck by Anthony Tjan

Action Hero Tom Monaghan: founder of Domino’s Pizza

Read C.S. Lewis Christianity – and discovered a change of heart

He decided to try and die broke and invested all his money into various causes to try and take as many people to heaven with him

You should read this book – as I have heard great things about it

Peak Performance:

Reminder to make sure you have made your life plan and your constitution

Peak Performance on Demand was created by Dr. Jim Leir to help professional athletes not choke on the day of the big game

But it can be applied to everyone as it helps you balance your life and manage stress

“Get prepared, because your opportunities will come and if you are not striving to be in ideal performance data at your best, your days of standing on the victory podium will pass to another. My friends, it's time to make it happen.” – Jim Richie

If you had one final lecture to share with a group of students on what you have learned from this course, what would you share?

I would share that you are unique and come with a power that no one else possesses. You can share it with the world or hide it and pretend to be something else. You will be most happy when you find your way and share the light you have inside you with others. That may come in the form of making chocolates, salads, computer programs, fixing cars, training children, or something that sparks joy in your soul.

What would be your last bit of advice to someone wanting to begin the entrepreneur journey?

Don’t hesitate, don’t doubt, just start moving forward. Time will keep moving forward and he waits for no one. Just do what you are going to do.

What words of advice, direction, or caution would you give him or her if you had only one chance to give your own last lecture?

Find your calling, progress in your path, and bring as many people to the kingdom as possible along the way. Finish the path and let eternity begin.
